As spring starts to slowly spring into being, home renovations come to mind to brighten and liven up our homes as well as our flower gardens. But where do you start such a project? Here is a top five list that works well:
1. First, ask yourself, how long do you think you will be living in your home? If the answer is “no date in the near future”, make the renovations fit your family and your needs. Choose changes that will enhance your life and make it more appealing to your palette, whether others like it or not. If the answer is within the next couple of years, create a buyers find. Choose what most of the market is looking for including the most up to date trends in the kitchen and color pallets for the wall. It will help you sell your home quicker and a much better selling price.
2. Are you looking to completely start from scratch or just a few changes here or there? If this is a complete home renovation, it might be a good idea to find other occupancy while your home is being reconstructed. It is chaos at its best at times. No kitchen, only one family bathroom for a while, and sometimes, no hot water. Family or friends might be available, but sometimes just staying down the street in the near hotel is the best option. Never forget that part of the financial home renovation budget.
For those looking to just change a few things here or there, weekend projects are great. One doorway a weekend or painting a guest bedroom does not have the capacity of kicking a family out while being taken care of.
3. Choosing your style to fit your family. If your home has a spanish look with arched doorways and Tuscan gates, maybe it’s not a good idea to add rocky mountain wood beams. Let the renovation fit the home. Find a design that you enjoy, but fits the style of the architecture. Otherwise, it never feels connected.
4. Keep within the budget. Create a budget before creating the renovation, otherwise, the renovation may halt due to end of funds. Plan the renovation with cost in mind. Be realistic as to costs before starting each step of the projects. Nothing is worse than being in the middle of a home renovation and it stalls.
5. And finally, and I’ve heard this in many circles; start with the small projects and work your way through the bigger of them all. Baby steps in home renovation allow for quick accomplishments, pushing you forward. It drives you to keep on moving forward until your expectations have been met.

Labor Day Weekend at our house means good food out on the back patio. The grill has hot dogs, ribs, chicken, and hamburgers cooking and in the house we always have corn boiling and salads chillin’ in the fridge.
The badminton game seems to keep on going all afternoon with the younger generations and the grandparents looking over Photo Albums and talking about trips taken in the last year.
Our family is in charge of the grill while everyone gets involved with setting up the buffet in the kitchen. It’s always the same in a good way. The last big friend and family get together of the summer. And that’s our family tradition for Labor Day.
It seems that more and more companies have evolved into employees working from home. This means more and more homes have offices to work in. Many spare bedrooms have been renovated into rooms with desks and computers. Bookshelves are being built into the walls and lighting fixtures are getting replaced with softer office light. Built in desks are getting more and more popular where I’ve seen them built into new homes in the last few years.
With change of office staffing from going to the office to staying home in the office, office renovations are the big thing right now. Here in the Wasatch Front, the western look seems to be very popular, but I prefer the more French Country look. It all depends on the personality of the home owner for sure.
Well, fall is coming and that means garage spring cleaning in our home. All the tools get organized, golf bags are cleaned out, and the garage floor is scrubbed clean. It’s a family affair with all the children invited (ordered) to help out.
The day actually turns out good and ending in ice-cream, but we find the oddest items. There are always more tools than we own, meaning our neighbors are missing a few. And tools missing from our garage are probably at the Jones garage when they had a car problem or house project. Last year we found a spare tire we knew nothing about and we are still trying to figure that one out. I think the best prize we’ve ever found in our garage clean out day is a baby doll carriage. We asked all our neighbors but no one knows where it came from.
Our yearly garage clean out day has become a tradition in our family that will never go away. I’ll make a bet our children will do the same with their families. And so on and so forth.

If anyone out there is like me, August means coming to the end of summer projects with a slight bit of panic. Don’t know why the panic, but I know the is panic there. So much to do and only a couple of months to do it before home projects come back inside. Flower beds are never quite where I wanted them to be at this point of the summer and exterior house plans may have to wait until next year. The plan for me? Finish up what I can and then prep for winter.
Neighbors watch me hustle day after day. I get up early, do what I can on the yard and exterior of the house before I have to get ready for work. Then I come home and work until nightfall. It didn’t start out this way in the spring. Noooo… I had plenty of time back then to get everything finished on my 2011 outside project list.

Recently, my wife and I have been watching a reality type television program that follows homebuyers through the process of purchasing a home.
The premise of the show is that the homebuyers walk through 3 different homes, and after weighing the pros and cons of each home, make their selection. One thing that has come abundantly clear to me after viewing the program is that every home buyer has unique needs and tastes. A home that can be one person’s dream can be another person’s nightmare.
With the purchase of home being such a financial and emotional investment, it makes sense to have your home fit your personal needs and tastes. Customizing your floor plan and selecting your own colors is of course an advantage of building a new home rather than buying an existing home. However, the advantages don’t end there. Below are just a few more advantages of custom building your new home with KEHL.
1. Energy Efficiency. Every new KEHL Home is ENERGY STAR compliant. Buying a new home built to ENERGY STAR guidelines can save you thousands of dollars in the long run in energy bills. It will also make your home a more comfortable place to be.
2. Advanced Building Methods and Products. Like with many things these days, building methods and technology are always improving. New homes are built too much higher standards even compared to homes built 10 years ago, protecting your most important investment– your family.
3. Warranties. All new homes come with a 1 year warranty. Also vital components such as roofing, water heater, and Air Conditioner will be brand new and something you will not need to worry about even after the year warranty period has expired.
4. Clean Let’s face it ,there is just something about living in a brand new home. It is clean and brand new without a scuff or dent.
5. Peace of mind Finally, there is peace of mind in living in a quality KEHL home. One of the most rewarding experiences I enjoy in my professional career is meeting people who have been in their KEHL home for decades and still express their appreciation of the peace of mind they received from building their new home.
We here at KEHL would love to help you make your dream home your reality. Contact us today to learn how we can help you receive all of the advantages building a new home can bring.
