I always cringed when I had to throw rock salt out on the sidewalks to remove the ice.  I knew it would deteriorate the concrete quickly and wanted to protect it.  So as I always do, I googled ice removers to find a less abrasive way to protect guests from falling on the ice.

What I found was that there are plenty of non abrasive ice melts out there.  I learned quite a bit about chemicals and temperatures at which ice melting products work best.  The biggest word I learned about was “brine”.  Brine means moisture mixed in with large quantities of salt.  Brine is an important part of ice melt.  The bottom line is to choose ice melts that advertise they are safe for concrete.  Awesome stuff.  So much better than shoveling and clears the snow and ice off the sidewalk so it will dry off and your sidewalks are clear.
